make a common denominator

a/b - c/d = a*d/b*d - c*b/d*b = (a*d-c*b)/b*d

when you have two fractions, in order to ADD or SUBTRACT you need a common denominator...

so if you have

3/4-1/8 you need to find a number in common since you can multiply 4*2 to equal 8 you can just use 8

so now you multiply the numerator and denominator of 3/4 times 2

so you have 6/8

so now you you have

6/8-1/8

now you don't subtract the denominators just the numerators so now you just have 5/8

if you can't find a number that can go into a number like the 4 going into 8 so if you're in doubt multiply the two numbers together so instead of a common number being 8 you have 32

so now multiply the first fraction (3/4) times 8 because thats how you go the answer 32

so now you have...
24/32 and then multiply the second fraction times 4 (same reason as up above)

so now you have 4/32

now 24/32-4/32=20/32

reduce it down to simplest form and you get

20/2=10 32/2=16 10/16

reduce further

10/2=5 16/2=8 5/8 just like up above

Get a common denominator--subtract the numerators.

For example:

1/3 - 1/4
4/12 - 3/12 (I converted both fractions to 12ths)
1/12

first you must have a common denominator (the bottom number)
Example 1/3 -1/12 would become 4/12-1/12=3/12 which is 1/4

Or you can change the fraction into a percentage and subtract normally then convert the percentage into a fraction
Example 1/3-1/12 would become 33.333%-08.333%=25% which is 1/4

Ok, let's say the problem is 1/2 - 1/3=?

First, get a common denominator
The least common denominator for this is 6, so change 1/2 to 3/6 and change 1/3 to 2/6

Now the problem is 3/6-2/6=?
Subtract the numerators 3-2=1
The answer would be 1/6

Good Luck!

you find a common denomitator and then just subtract ex. 4/5 -1/3= 12/15 - 5/15 = 7/15

Here it is:
a/b - c/d
= (ad - bc)/bd

Example:
5/6 - 2/3
= [(5)(3) - (2)(6)]/(6)(3)
= (15 - 12)/18
= 3/18
= 1/6

Another example:
15/18 - 7/10
= [(15)(10) - (7)(18)]/(18)(10)
= (150 - 126)/180
= 24/180
= 2/15
