Because they are outside the mainstream culture. Think about it, if the country were mostly gay wouldn't you call yourself a straight American?

I agree, and like black people want to be called african-american, okay, why? I mean they are an american now, so why do they still want to be called african american. I mean it's so bizzare. You live in America, you are an American, if you live in Africa you are an African, why mix? You aren't in Africa anymore. No offense toward any black people, I just am kinda confused why you want to be called "african american" when you are an american citizen.

This has been asked too many times, but here we go one more time, you have to distinguish between skin colors eventually- like a caucasian -american robbed a bank today between 6 feet and 6'2 blah blah blah. Just saying an American doesn't narrow it down and you can't say black or white any more.

I agree that we are all Americans, but some people automatically want to seperate you into what they think you are, as the example you gave. Ultimatelly, all of us here make America no matter where we came from.

I agree: the "(whatever country)-American" politically correct thing has gotten way beyond dignity and is now bordering on plain out right ignorant.

If you're born in America--then you're American.

If you're born in another country and have LEGAL American citizenship, then you too are American, hey: congratulations. And you're "American / (whatever country) decent".

If everyone called themselves Americans regardless of race maybe it would catch on. Hey, why don't you start the trend?

Go! Go! Go! You can do it!!!

If you mean that we have to be Americans according to American (U.S.) culture, you'll fail miserably. America (U.S.) has no an established culture.
