Program has taken over my home page on login and tries to shut my computer down. Says spyware trying to attach to my computer.

Actually this might require you to edit your registry. Before doing this, be sure you know what you are doing, because you can permanently damage your computer.
click start, go to run, select, type REGEDIT, enter. When it opens find HKEY CURRENT USER, and click on the plus sign. Now find software, and click on that plus sign. Find the program, by company name or program name. When you are sure you've found the right one, right click and delete it.
When this is complete, go through HKEY LOCAL MACHINE and find if it is there also. Do it the exact same way. Then HKEY CURRENT CONFIG. Shut down and restart.
If by some chance it is a really stubborn piece of spyware, it may not let you do it that easily. You will then need to change permissions. When you have navigated to the program, right click and select permissions. Grant yourself full permissions, and then delete it.

This happened to my brother. He said he kept getting a a green icon with a little man in a wheel chair. And the pop up "Virus Activity has been detected....click here ..."
We went to trend micro and downloaded their anti spyware trial version(which still removes spyware) and then we got Spybot Search and Destroy which was recommended by Smart Computing.com. From now on he (my brother) will only download freeware that is from microsoft.com or smart computing. Norton 2006 is great too, it removed it completely.

to get rid of a program, you have to go to Control Panel, then to Add/Remove Programs. From there, click protectmypc, and click remove. and if that doesn't work, search for files on your computer by typing in protectmypc, and if any come up, delete them, then empty your recycling bin
