Depends on the child, the living situation, and if there are friends or relatives nearby.

If a child is reliably responsible, and you live in a safe area, and there is a neighbor, friend or relative to look in on him frequently, then maybe 14, with understanding of NO friends, etc.

If you have had any trouble in the past with not listening to your rules, or there is no one to physically come check up on him, then I would say closer to 17.

What do I base this on? Raising 6 kids, plus "extra's", even though they were all good kids. It's a lot easier to prevent problems than to have to do damage control later.

I think this is more of a common sense thing - you obviously would not leave a small child alone, even if he/she seems to be "mature." A pretty safe age to leave a child home - providing they are responsible would be 13+, in my opinion.

You would need to call the police department or social services. The law differs state to state and also has other factors that are taking into consideration...maturity, access to emergency services that may or may not be available, whether any medical issues are present, etc.

Are you nuts. It is never OK, to leave him BY HIMSELF. If you need to be gone overnight, ask a friends parents if he can sleep there.
-Before the age of 15 they are not able to make good decisions
-After the age of 15 they make stupid decisions

Legally I don't know. I'm sure it varies in each state. It depends on the minors maturity as well.
