Why should the government care about the poor?

I mean seriously, this is America!! Only the lazy are poor!! They don't care about anyone but themselves and their welfare checks anyway.. Why should any of our taxes go to them.. It's soo easy to get a job in the U.S., why don't they just do it. This is the land of opportunity where every and anybody can succeed if they just put in a little effort!! I say screw them and lower my taxes where they should be!!

Some of you are getting things twisted.. I don't care if they are truly needy either.. If you want to help them, go for it!! I shouldn't be taxed to help them if I don't want to. I'd rather keep my money than have them spend it on their booze!!

I understand where you are coming from and for The educated getting a job is easy. Our society is so much different the 30 or 40 years ago when a person could get by on a 6th grade education. My father raised 5 children and never excepted or expected charity from anyone especially the government. Everyone today feels they are entitled. The government and society has afforded them that luxury. Some are truly needy and deserving but I am pretty sure the lazy out number them. With what we spend on the people here I am sure you can multiply that hundreds of times over in what we spend on foreign aid to other countries. Until we start voting libs out and elect persons who are like minded and feel government is to big things will never change. Every facet of the government is corrupt and we need to clean house and the Kennedy's should be the first to go. If you want it changed than you sound the charge and start the attack so others join in and remember there are some that are truly needy the rest, get a job. We are tired paying for your food and medical.

Well, It is obvious that you are not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree. So I will try to use smaller words to explain. If the government did not support the " lazy poor" then this is what would happen. everyone in the U.S.A. would be dead! How do I know this? Listen up. This country is the largest consumer economy in the world. In other words, we buy everybodies stuff. If the government didn't subsides ( give money) to the poor, they could not buy stuff and if stuff is not being bought in the U.S.A. then our economy fails and so does the rest of the world that sells us stuff. If the world economy fails then we have WW III and everybody has nukes and WMD's which equals. We all die. perhaps,you should read a book about the great depression and you will understand why "The New Deal" and Social Security came to be.

I think a safety net is needed for those down and out, but it should not be a life long handout. That was the idea of welfare reform pushed by Clinton. OMG that is almost a moderate policy from a commie liberal.

I am more concerned with the eroding of the middle class. Nobody really speaks for them. Let's not forget the reason for the rise of communism to begin with: A large population of oppressed poor. If the middle class goes, this country will spiral into revolution. It may take 100 years, but it will happen. If you want to protect the republic, protect the middle class and give people the opportunity to become middle class. I know most conservatives cannot understand this, but if you don't want outright socialism, you have to give into a little socialism.

I feel where you are coming from but then again i dont. Some people who are poor arent that way just b/c they cant get a job. Some people have jobs and still are poor. For one they can only have poor jobs b/c college isnt free so they can have good paying careers. I do feel that they need to watch some people who have welfare and miss use it. You cant say that they dont care about anyone else but their checks and themselves if you do not know any of them. Most of the people i know who are on welfare care about their kids and paying the bills.

I think you have things backwards. "Only the lazy are poor". Usually people who do back breaking labor are the one's who are paid the least because it is considered unskilled. Take for instance your local garbage man who works hard every day of the week, but makes only minimum wage or slightly higher. I'll tell you why people who rely on the government for support...because they can make more money from welfare than they can breaking their back 5 days a week making minimum wage. Think about it, if you had to choose to work forty plus hours per week at minimum wage or take a free check from the government, which would you choose. The problem is the government has not increased minimum wage, so there is no incentive to work hard at these jobs.

You have obviously never needed a break. With the cost of living nowadays it is almost impossible to live on a part-time job. Maybe they were dealt a *****y hand in life. I fought cancer for 5 years and have so many bills i am definetly considered poor. I have never asked anyone for anything and I work damn hard to make a living but with what I went through, I cannot get a different job. My funds are stretched as far as they go and I can't move somewhere else. It is too expensive for me. I have worked all my life and if I died today I would die happy, but I am far to proud to take the assistance that is offered to me. Maybe others like me arent too proud and need a break and I for one am happy to help them. Maybe I should say SCREW YOU!!!!! Hopefully you never need help because with that attitude you do not deserve it.

I actually know alot of lazy 'rich' people, so your logic doesn't hold alot of water.
Alot of people have disabilities and mental issues (none of which they can help either) and the government could care less about these people. They only hold high regard for the wealthy and lobbiests for their political party/ies.
They SHOULD care, because unless these poor (and probably hard-working) people are living across the U.S. border somewhere, they have every right to be helped.
I do agree, however, that people who are overusing and abusing the Welfare system when they are capable of working, should be accountable and be made to work off their overpayments.

I think the government should help those that "really" need a "hand up" at times. The problem with the system is that it has turned into the "handout" business. I see it as the government creating a population of slaves that can't do without the master. So I really would like to see much more reform done to social programs so that they are operated smarter and more efficient.

Only the lazy are poor? What about the working poor? And was this always true about America? What about during slavery? What about when children were forced to work 60 hours per week and lived in poverty?

Simple sociology. If the masses are not content they will let you know.
But dont be so naive. Not all poor are lazy, recently alot of people have been getting screwd and put out of work.
and your taxes are high for other reasons than just the poor, four years ago 50% of our tax dollars went to the military.
I dont know what percentage it is now.

And just so you know, the govt spends more per prison inmate than school child. Lets legalize marajuana so our taxes drop. Drug users have stricter sentences than child predators.
