This (MacArthur Park) started out as the last 7 minutes of a 22 minute Cantata, so unless your familiar with the first 15 minutes, you miss a lot of the story. Donna Summer (The Supremes, Richard Harris (the actor) and others who spoke or sang this) don't sing about an actual physical cake that sat in the rain and melted, but rather use the cake, rain, and park as a metaphor to a LOVE she once had and that NOW GONE he can never build again.

Because they were stoned and forgot to bring it in. As to why they'll never have that recipe again, they baked it into the cake. I know, I was there, and it took him nearly 6 and a half hours to bake it by the way.

Because the relationship sung about went down the drain and when its that bad, you don't get the recipe again because it wont work in that relationship. It may have but at some point damage set in.

many years ago, it was common practice to set cakes or pies in the window or outside to cool them off right after coming out of the oven.
evidently someone forgot about the cake or it started raining unexpectedly.
about the recipe, i could only speculate.

its a metafor for a failingg love affair, nothing to do with cakes in the rain or getting a recipe to make a cake. it refers to how one person in the relationship didnt take care of the relationship, and how how theyll never find how to have a good relationship again

For no apparent reason. It's just part of the lyrics. Originally sung by the actor Richard Harris and re-made by the great Donna Summer.

I'm curious why that was such a tragedy and they felt compelled to write a song about it!
