I found stock certificates from American Northland Oil Corp issued in 1953 to my grandparents. Is the corporation still around? Did another company take it over? What is it's new name?

Your best bet is to take them to broker, like Edward Jones. They are the best. It is never a good idea to hold onto the individual certificates because of situations like this. A Broker can tell you if they are still in business, if they were acquired by another company, or are out of business. Then if they are still in business (ven if they have been acquired), you can deposit the stock certificates with the broker and they will automatically keep the reords up to date as long as you own it. The reason I like Edward Jones is there is no charge for any of this.
