Julian Lee Hobbs. Emerald, 38, called the ad a "friendly hoax" and readily admits he never found one of the rare animals.

"There really wasn't a panda found. I've never even seen a real panda in real life," Emerald said. "Most people think it's really funny ... I don't think the zoo is too happy with me though."

As of last week, the main zoo switchboard had received only two phone calls regarding the prank.

A zoo spokeswoman said Bai Yun gave birth in 2003 to Mei Sheng, who is now technically a juvenile and not a baby. And he's not missing.

Emerald is no stranger to newspaper pranks. In 1990, he lied to the media about being linked romantically to actress Elizabeth Taylor. Most recently, Emerald ran a classified in a Santa Barbara newspaper in which he claimed to have found a prosthetic nose near Neverland Ranch.
