Never. A friend of mine met up with Alfred Hitchcock... no bodyguard. It turns out that he was a very friendly man, and very easy to talk to.
But may famous authors are not recognizable at all. They can even carry a copy of their own book, showing their picture, and they won't be recognized.
Few professional athletes have bodyguards. I've met a few in public places. Sometimes, they wear an unusual hat, so they re not recognized.
Many actors live in places where they do not need bodyguards. I've bumped into some outside of the big city that didn't.

It probably depends on the author. Salman Rushdie, author of "The Satanic Verses," most likely has a bodyguard after death threats were made against his life. As a general rule, though, most authors do not need bodyguards.
