For a secretary, you can go with any major realy, because most they will be looking for is that you are familiar with microsoft office. If you have a diploma stating that you are familiar with it, you should not have much trouble.

You can be a secretary... or "administrative assistant" as they are often now called... without a college degree. I think you can shoot a little higher.

In any case, you need computer skills, so at least basic classes in the operating system and Microsoft Office will help. A major in Business would work, though a major in English would also help a great deal. Or major in one and minor in the other. ;)

Good luck!

If you want to be a legal secretary, you should consider a Public Justice or Pre-law major. Otherwise, an English program or a computer program would be beneficial. I'm a zoology major and I'm mostly applying for administrative assistant positions. So there is no true major to go for, but these are my suggestions.

Honey, I seriously wouldn't waste your money paying for a 4 year degree if you want to be in admin. Spend your time instead researching which admin support position you're interested in and get certification from a tech school that's specialized for MUCH less money. Then, that extra time you save NOT going to a 4-year school will be spent actually IN the work force, also driving up your salary each year.

I never went to college and "fell into" an admin position at 19...I LOVED IT!! With a good work ethic, attention to detail and confidentiality, that's good enough to climb the admin ladder. I didn't get any certification or anything, I just did my job well, dressed appropriately and conducted myself professionally - something I quickly noticed was very hard to come by these days.

Your highest paying admin jobs will be that of the corporate variety. That's what I did (corporate legal secretary). I worked for several big companies for their VP/General Counsel (head lawyer). By 25 years old, I was making about $50,000/yr in a big city in the Midwest had no student loans to pay back. I'd be happy making that the rest of my life, but I left the work force to be a stay-at-home mom. And, now I'm especially glad I didn't pay thousands in student loans!!

Admin positions are very rewarding in that you play an integral role in how your company functions, but don't have the stress of the "big boys". Your salary will be better if you try for the executive assistant jobs for bigger companies (and you'll get better benefits). Your only caveat in seeking any admin position is making sure your immediate superior is respectful of you as a person and doesn't view you as a "pee-on". That will make your job miserable. Just screen prospective employers just as they're screening you during the interview. Go with your "spidey senses" and you'll be fine. If the guy seems like a schmuck in the interview, he probably is. :o)

My advice would be, figure out where you hope to be in 15 years. I always knew I'd (hopefully) be staying home with my kids once I had them, so I didn't seek the associates degree. But, if you think you'll continue to work throughout all of your adulthood, I'd seek a specialized degree. Areas of business like law or marketing support will like to see specialized certificates or associates degree on your resume. While you're at the tech school, take any sort of job that will look good on your resume, especially one that has you working with office equipment, multi-line phones, typing or receiving people.

Best of luck! I loved admin!

P.S. Working as a legal secretary at a lawfirm is awful! I've worked at a few and the culture is all about heirarchy and status. They also typically pay peanuts and don't offer benefits (or if they do, they're extremely expensive for the employee). Corporations more often than not will pay better, offer better bennies and have better people working for them (happier bosses and coworkers).

I would say business administration. But if you want to be a secretary, you should shoot for legal secretary, there is more money and i think more respect involved. If you are interested in this, you could focus on law as well.

Good Luck!!

I have to recommend Business Administration. It's a good way to get yourself a reputable degree that will really help with secretarial work.

English is an excellent choice, but I'd back that with a second major, perhaps in business.
