Do you think the ref made the right desicion giving Italy the penalty kick at the very end, seconds before the whistle blew? I do not think so, but I am not so good with the rules of football. Plz answer honestly!

Well now there's a loaded question!! Many of those who would vote for Australia would obviously state that it was an unfair call. Many who would vote for Italy would state it was a fair call. But as most sportscasters have already reported, there was little choice for the ref. The player was interfered with, even if only unintentionally. The player had a very good chance with two other Italian players closing to make the goal and was only within 12 feet or less of the net. The ref already will have to answer (according to FIFA) for the unusual red card given to Materazzi for nothing more than a play on the ball (no yellow shown). It is frustrating that none of the games seem to be consistent in their refereeing, not within a game and not from one ref to another, but that is between FIFA and the ref. You'll know what FIFA thinks of the ref if they don't end up reffing another game but in this case it would be 6 of one, half dozen of another. The call was fair. If anything, the referee gave Australia a huge gift by giving Materazzi the red card at the beginning of the second half and you can bet the Italians would have had their way with a replay of the match if the Italians had lost. And rightly so. Sorry but Australia has nothing to be upset about, they played extremely well in this tournament but unfortunately were outclassed by a better team, reffing notwithstanding. PS I'm an Aussie fan...

They were simply the beneficiary of yet another bad judgement by a referee. This world cup has been full of them as we all have seen and are now reading about in the sporting news. Most of the soccer writers at the world cup have said that there is no way that a penalty kick was justified. The Italian player took a dive and sold it very well and fooled the referee. We all are aware I'm sure that history has shown us that in a game of this importance and at that stage of the game, traditionally a foul in the box needs to be of a much more severe and obvious nature to be called than that one was. A poor way to win a game where "fair play" is supposed to rule.

As the rules state: if the player is interfered with while in possession of the ball if the ball is not within the opposing player's play, then a foul will be called. Unfortunately, this means even if 'by accident' a player is interfered with, it is still a foul. It's no different than, say hockey, where if a player's stick hit's an opponents' face, even by accident, it is still a two minute 'high sticking' penalty. Intention is not an issue. Surely, there didn't appear to be any 'intended' interference, but there most definitely was physical interference, which rightly a foul. Tough call, but fair.

Refined cheating by “Italy” and worst referees of World cup 2006, I am very sad it happened in a world cup Quarter-final match, when whole world is watching. Both the decision of red card and penalty was wrong. Australia played really well and had a good chance to win the match.

i feel very bad for the downunder team, as i would have loved to see them in the quarterfinals... underdog teams always spice up a world cup!!

too bad they had to play against italy - as an italian, of course i was for italy and i'm more than happy that tottigol has re-established his reputation as a top-scorer with a killer-instinct!

by the way: i'd give the 10 points for the best answer to franknfriend: he answered in the most non-emotional, honest and objective way, compared to the others...!

i think the ref didn't right in that case, but he needed to do that. Italia is the team who played better than Austrailia. But the way Italia's win is not fair.

i agree with you cause it was a lesser fault that could be resolved with yellow card or a free kick it didnt apply for a penalty
