I say a marriage based on love. While I do see the wisdom of arranged marriages-that parents know their own children well and may be better judges of character due to more years of experience, thus they are able to choose a GOOD match. Then again, the parents could be wrong in their judgment, or they could be basing their criteria on a person's monetary situation, who their family is, etc.
These days, many people secure there own financial situations, or at least start to in there early 20's, and many of the reasons for arranged marriages are outdated.

Personally, I think you are the best judge of your own character and who you will "mesh" with, or get along with best, IF you are honest with yourself. Often, outside opinons about a relationship can open your eyes to certain things (good or bad) about the nature of that relationship, so don't automatically discount a parent's, other relative's, or friend's opinion on that subject.
And increasingly, what used to KEEP marriages together is no longer the case-financially it was considered easier to stay married, people stayed married for the sake of their children, it was socially looked down upon, etc. Now, divorcees are very common and often remarry, and most people-male or female-have their own incomes, so they do not absolutely depend on another person for their financial security. Today, what keeps marriages together is a genuine affection for the other person, i.e. love, and how well the two get along; also, a commitment to the other person to make it work and try to work out problems no matter what it takes-counseling, therapy, compromising, etc.
