Depending on what the accident was or what caused the coma etc. YES! Not only is it possible but often DOES happen! When one type of function stops or is changed drastically, the mind and body both re-route certain energies which control basic operations, new "abilities" or "gifts" are not "NEW", most or all people have them within us from birth and are simply either neglected or ignored or otherwise "programed" out of use through childhood.
If the question is in regards to someone you know, simply try to be supportive and remind them to just go easy and learn/adjust to their new thing slowly. If its about you, same thing, just go slow with it, get used to it, learn it, allow time for adjustments etc.
Its a natural way to make up for something else lost or damaged, fear of it should not be allowed. Whatever it is (or they are) its there to help, if its something spectacular it shouldn't be abused! Good luck and best wishes!

Since the human brain is very unstudied it's hard to say. The movie The Dead Zone is about a guy who woke up, after six years in a coma, with ESP. I don't personally see why it couldn't happen, we only use ten percent of our brains as it is, why couldn't something wake up those parts of the brain?? If we could only figure out how to turn it on and off like a switch, now that would be awesome.

yes, your brain may have found another route to take as far as the way it sends messages and signals, because of trauma, injury or swelling of the brain
