Common sense is a rare gift from the gods. Most people have only technical training.
The Gods do not deduct from a mans span those hours spent in sailing.
Life is a banquet and most poor bastards are starving to death.

Happiness is like a cat. If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you. It will never come. But if you pay no attention to it and go about your business, you'll find it rubbing up against your legs and jumping into your lap. --William Bennett
or..
The road to happiness lies in two simple principles: find what it is that interests you and that you can do well, and when you find it, put your whole soul into it--every bit of energy and ambition and natural ability you have. -- John D. Rockefeller III

one of my favorites is: i think we're in rats' alley, where the dead men lost their bones" as i recall it's ts eliot and from "the wasteland" i would use it when one of my college students would ask: well, what do you think about______________, professor. it usually got a laugh or two. when you reflect on it, it is a bit saddening and not wholly inappropriate in today's world.
