I'm not usually a fan of soccer, but am enjoying the world cup matches. But I just think the thumb sucking ritual is weird. How did it start? Does it mean something that I don't understand?

the rituals change by time and the players.
A few years ago, a brazilian player "Bebeto" used to craddle his arms and rock them in signal of dedication to his baby. A lot of players still do it.

Scoring during a World Cup is the maximum objective for a player. Their names will stay there for history and it can easily define the situation of their team. They also get monetary recognition for them.

If it was me I would be sucking my thumb and doing the happy dance just out of joy!!
