828 miles.

1x + 1.5x = 1380
2.5x = 1380
x = 552 (the second day)
1.5x = 828 miles (the first day)

So, you have two variables in this equation, x and y. We will say:

x = day one distance travelled
y = day two distance travelled

so our initial equation is,

x + y = 1380

We know that the distance travelled the first day was 1.5 (or 150 percent) the distance travelled on day two. Therefore, we can say that x (day 2 distance), is equal to y * 1.5, which gives us 1.5y. So we have,

x = 1.5 y

Let's plug in the 1.5y into our initial equation stated at the top, which is x + y = 1380. We now know that x = 1.5 y, therefore we can restate the initial equation as,

1.5y + y = 1380

which can be restated as,

2.5y = 1380

Now we solve for y by dividing both sides by 2.5

2.5y / 2.5 = 1380 / 2.5
y = 552

Now we can solve for x (day one distance) by simply plugging in our y value into the initial equation,

x + y = 1380
x + 552 = 1380
x = 1380 - 552 = 828 miles travelled on first day

that's all there is to it! this is a pretty basic algebra problem, search "college algebra tutorial" on yahoo to get all the info you need.

let x = miles travelled on 2nd day
hence
2.5x = 1380
x = 552
1.5x = 552 + 276
= 828
thus
pete travelled 828 miles on the first day

Day 1: x miles
Day 2: y miles

1380 = x + y

x = 1.5y

1380 = (1.5y) + y
1380 = 2.5y
552 = y

x = 1.5(552)
x = 828

Day 1: 828 miles

x = distance traveled first day
x + (1.5 x) = 1380
x = 1380/2.5 = 552 miles the first day

X represent distant covered in one day
so the first day pete covered X distance and the seconnd day pete covered 1.5X distance (1.5 times X ..)
so answer:
X+1.5X=1380
solve for X

Day one + Day Two = 1380
Do=1.5Dt
1.5Dt + Dt = 1380
Dt = 1380/2.5
Dt = 552
Do = 1380 - 552
Do = 828 miles

d1 + d2 = 1380
d1 = 1.5 x d2      >>>      d2 = d1 ÷ 1.5

d1 + ( d1 ÷ 1.5 ) = 1380
( 1.5 x d1 ) + d1 = 1380 x 1.5
2.5 x d1 = 2070
d1 = 2070 ÷ 2.5
d1 = 828
