Thats so awesome you asked! I did this 2 weeks ago because my kids and I were curious! So, here are the results- if you lick repeatedly in one area it takes 64 licks and if you put the whole thing in your mouth and pull it out repeatedly and count that as a lick, it only takes around 34-36. (my 6 year old did this one and I think she cheated) so there you are- but lets be honest....its WAY more fun to try it yourself!
the commercial came out in the earyl 70s and has a line cartoon of an owl a kid and a really cute turtle. Remember the owl saying "a one, a two, a threeeee...crunch! three."?

I first started being put on tv in the 70's and the main people on it were the boy, the turtle, and the owl.
"How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?....The world may never know!"

This has been on the minds of many since the original 1970 television commercial posed the question.
