Watering in the evening is better. And you a slow steady stream so the the water gets down into the soil instead of evaporating. When the water soaks down into the ground, the roots of the plants grow down into the soil also. If the water doesn't get a chance to soak down into the ground, the roots remain towards the top of the soil. For a strong healthy plant, you want the roots to grow down into the soil. Plus, the deeper into the ground the roots get, they less you need to water them. Here's some other gardening tips:

If you used a weed barrier and either rock or mulch you need to only water about once a week because it holds in the moisture. I just planted 87 plants in my landscaping and the contractor said 1 to 2 times is plenty. More than that could actually harm your plants. When you do soak them though do it in the early morning and not at night to prevent root rot.

that really depends on what plant you are watering and where you are located. I water my lawn and flower beds in the morning and in the evening for an hour or so everyday but I live in a wet green place that can afford that kind of water consumption. Some plants and flowers dont need that kind of watering- some just need daily or every other day.

i live in texas so you can only imagine the heat here!once a week in the evening i let my sprinkler go on my veggie and flower gardens for about a hour and a half, that give them the inch of water that they they need, then once a day in the evenings i water them with a water hose sprayer,to make up for the heat evaporation during the day,and its okay to go a day without watering if i am to tired from work.

Do not water after 6PM!! I can't believe how many people are suggesting this. By watering at night (dusk) you are making your lawn susceptible to a FUNGUS. You don't want this since it would destroy your lawn unless treated early and the antifungus treatments are very expensive. Water twice a day. 5AM and 5PM unless you are getting steady rain and then it is best to water every other day.

I say when dry when needed... Evening is the best. But every so often just turn the sprinkler on in your bed... like once a week or so. On like a hot day Yeah... I guess. :)

Wait until late in the evening when the sun goes down right before night fall. Then soak everything good.

Night time is the best time. That way the plants get more water and it doesn't evaporate in the hot sunlight.
