Bio Balls can they just float in the tank do hte got to be in the filter thing?

They need to be in a trickle filter to work properly. If you are looking for a simple filter a sponge with an air stone inside it works well.

They have to be in the filter, with a constant stream of water running through, or they don't work effectively.
