Yes— this was an effective and legal program, until the lid was blown off by the NYT. And there was little pressing need for the public to know about it.
This may rise to the level of sedition (aiding the enemy), a form of treason against the country, a very serious crime, but the Attorney General must decide to act, against the leaker and/or any news outlets that published the story. At the very least, two things should happen: the Administration needs to find the leak and fire someone; and Congress should pass a Joint Resolution to chastise the NYT (and other papers, such as the LA Times & WaPo) as an exercise of public outing/shaming. That may be enough to make them consider the deep water they are approaching.
Does the public really need to know about tracing the financial transactions of terrorists, at the price of the lost effectiveness of that program once Osama picks up the paper and reads about how we're on to him? The public doesn't benefit in any way from knowing, except to satisfy its idle curiosity. But in doing so, the nation is less secure.
John Snow (the outgoing Treasury Secretary) and others in the Bush administration made repeated efforts to convince the Times not to go to ink with this story, but editor-in-chief Bill Keller ignored them and printed the story anyway. In the end, it may cost him jail time.

Of course they should be held accountable.!!!!.Anyone who leaks national classified secrets should be treated as criminals. What is the MATTER with that damn paper?! Do they want the downfall of my country? Do they not care how it compromises us?Due to the fact that this country has the most biased left wing newspapers ever, all the other rags will support them. Somehow, President Bush will get the brunt of all this. All he has to do is get up in the morning and the Liberals and their Liberal Press find fault with Him, not the ones who are jeopardizing the lives of many. I find this kind of worthless behavior on the brink of treason.

No! Thank god for the press is telling us what is going on with the Bush administration and all the secrets they keep from us.They need to expose more! This debate is created by Rove to distract us from the truth and silence the press. Our freedom is being stolen from us by the evil empire running our nation. They step on the constitution every day in the name of protecting us. They continue to try and control us with fear and lies. Sadly many people are falling for it.

Yes they should. The press is a bunch of nosy people sticking their microphones in places they don't need to be. I understand "Freedom of Press" BUT there are some cases where it would be better information stayed OUT of the public's ear.

I think the NY Times should be held accountable for a lot of what they print. Also, whoever leaked the info needs to be tried for treason. We are at war and saying what was said and printing what was said are endangering our safety and sanity. Treasonous...

YES!!!!This country and its government has the right to conduct secret operations in order to protect all of us.
No newspaper or journalist should put the own glory in front of the safety of everyone that lives in the US.
The operation was legal it was done overseas. In times of war we must operate with intelligence and strategic reasoning..
The Times just dislikes Conservative Republicans.
TREASON

Yes ...They continually are irresponsable.
Yes freedom of the press but we are in a war and there are lives at stake there are somethings you have to trust the government to handle.
And if they do not handle them well then they should be held accountable.
They have overstepped there bounds.
Loose lips sink ships!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
