That's like asking why the US uses inches, feet, etc., instead of the metric system (which the rest of the world uses). Basically, it's just because we're the US. No reason. But it's too much of a hassle to change, apparently, on both counts.

there are different games called football:
Australian Rules Football
Rugby
American Rules Football (american Football)

and then you have what's called:
Association Football or soccer or football as the world knows it. The name soccer comes from as-SOC-iation.

I say we blame Charles Wreford Brown for using the word soccer as an abbreviation for asSOCiation football.

Because the USA have to be weird and give the name "football" to a game where they rarely use their feet and re-name a game that is played mainly with feet to soccer!

the same reason that
The US calls it a hood, and the UK calls it a bonnet
The US calls it a trunk, and the UK calls it a boot
The US calls it a cookie, and the UK calls it a biscuit...

my point is, they speak English, we speak American

Because the U.S. likes to be "different".

It's the same with our measurement system. We have customary but everyone else has metric.
