Because you haven't plugged it into your speaker jack and shoved it in your ear...

For starters, a microphone is what you use to talk into--you can never hear anything in a microphone. If you check the 'mute' box in the master volume control panel, that makes the microphone inoperative, so nobody can hear you. It has nothing to do with what YOU can hear.

you shouldn't hear anything through a microphone, they are for speaking into.
