What Is A Sister Company

Relationships in companies are the same as in human families.

If you can imagine a person's family tree with several generations, then by cutting out a piece, you can see business relationships as well.

A company that owns other companies is a parent. It may also be the child of another company higher in the family tree.

Two or more companies that belong to the same parent are sister companies. Each of them could be parents of other companies below them.

In practice, the ultimate parent (top of the tree) is generally called the parent, and all other companies are called sister companies. It would be too complicated to talk about cousin and grandparent companies within one organization.

A parent company has controlling interest and a sister company is another company that your head company bought.

Example, if AT&T owns SBC and Yahoo, SBC and Yahoo are sister companies that operate under the ATT umbrella.

AOL and CNN are both now owned by Time Warner. Time Warner bought them so now CNN and AOL are sister companies with the same parent: Time Warner.

It's just one big insestual family out there. Everybody buying everybody to ultimately give the shareholders more money.
