Never. Seriously. Make sure automatic updates are disabled and do not download any updates even when prompted.
I'm connected to the Internet at 26k right now because I was an idiot and I downloaded and installed 'the latest' security updates. After the next reboot, my DSL modem was no longer recognized. I was prompted to uninstall and reinstall the driver. After I uninstalled and tried to reinstall, windows told me it couldn't find the driver. It offered to search the web, and couldn't find the driver there either. I tried searching the web for a driver but it's an outdated modem and I couldn't find the file I needed. But the damn thing was working FINE for years before the stinking updates, now I have to go out and buy a new modem.
Now when I click 'Preview' it will take about 20 seconds for the screen to come up. Oh joy. Thanks Microsoft. What would I do without your precious updates??!

If you have Windows XP the updates will happen automatically on your screen where all your icons are.If you have a firewall they might not happen so go every i would say month or so and update at the microsoft website thats about how often it updates for me
