I hear a clicking noise when driving, not turning. I saw that the boot is busted and it is leaking grease. Also, please recommend honest, affordable mechanics in Houston, TX.
About how long would it take to DIY on a '98 Nissan Sentra?

I have replaced CV joints maybe 4 times myself. don't do it. Its like a fight in some ways and you do need some specialized tools too. It should cost maybe $350 to get both done. When they are grinding, not clicking then just get it done.

First of all I would do a little more checking on this problem. CV joint problems usually present at first as a clicking or popping when turning under power. If it is indeed the cv joint, it isn't that hard to do for someone that has even a little training and the proper tools. Once the outside end of the axle is released from the hub most axles take just a pry bar to release the c-clip on the inside of the axle from the transmission. Also if it is the cv joint you may want to consider replacing the whole half shaft. The price isn't that much greater than just the joint and if you're having someone else do it you'll more than make up the differance in the labor that it will require to rebuild just the joint. If they are torn open and the grease looks and or feels dirty, replace the whole thing.. They are like 50-60 bucks for a complete halfshaft.. doing it yourself depends on your knowledge of cars.. split the lower ball joint, remove the caliper and axle nut, then pull out on the spindle while pushing the end of the axle backwards through the hole.this may require persuasion from a hammer. once the outboard side is out, pry the inboard side out of the transaxle with a prybar. Install in reverse, making sure to tap inner joint fully in to trans "clicks in". It should take about an hour with real tools

can't help you with the mechanic in TX but there iis no such thing as re-packing CV joints unless you took a known good one apart and cleaned it. Replace the axle they are cheap call around most half shafts can be bought for under a hundred dollars.

if theres any chance dirt has contaminated the axle, have it replaced, repacking will only patch it for awhile. most big chain parts stores sell manuals for your car for about 14$, it will tell you how to do everything. its the number one tool for the DIY. you can read on how to check your axle, and replace it, to see if you have the patience and time to do it, also any special tools that might be needed. also, you will know what is suppose to be done to your car at a shop. let them know you are knowledgable of your car, and they will less likly risk trying to rip you off!

except Renault have replaced their joints you'll need the finished shaft. Takes about a million.5 hours to in good structure. on the time I labored with them in uncomplicated phrases Renault presented them. yet that become 10 years in the past.

Replace the CV shaft. It is cheaper and MUCH less time-consuming than rebuilding a CV joint.

If you have clicking it is worn out. If it is clicking in a straight ahead position this is generally an inner joint. Jules, auto tech and lecturer. Australia.

If the rubber boot is cracked and the joint itself is making noise when you turn then it is probably time to replace.
