I don't have grass planted in my new backyard yet and I found a copper head right at my back door today. How do I prevent snakes from entering my yard? I live near a Lake and active train tracks, which probably has a lot to do with the snakes...

I've heard of a couple of ways to get rid of snakes. One way is to put out mothballs around your yard and house, and they are supposed to discourage the snakes from coming into your yard. Another is to burn sulfur, and put it around the house. And if you want to kill a snake without touching it, this is the weirdest way I've heard to do so far. A customer told me to take a plastic egg, like those used for Easter, and put a real chicken egg yolk inside of it. Then take the plastic egg and put it with real chicken eggs and put it where you know the snake will get it. Supposedly, the snake doesn't know the difference, and will eat the plastic egg too, and since snakes can't digest plastic, it would die from it. I hope this info helps.

you cant, really

snakes can climb.

the best thing to do is to keep the grass really short and make sure there are no mice or other edibles around, and the snakes wont want to hang around.

And, for the above posters, a mongoose can kill a cobra, but cobra strikes are slow compared to copperheads. (cobras rear up straight and strike in an arc, like if you rest your elbow on the desk and keep it still and move your hand towards the desk. Copperheads and rattlesnakes form an "S" curve and strike in a straight line, very quickly) Mongooses are NOT immune to snake poison, they are just fast, and (I've seen a video of this) a rattlesnake (or copperhead) can kill a mongoose.
