Yes, there are many socially isolated or lonely people now; and they often seek love in the wrong places.The proliferation and popularity of dating services and matchmakers, especially on the web says that community living where people knew their neighbours and socialized with them is becoming as scarce as hen's teeth.Most people whio have an iPod, computer,game box,TV,cell phone etc. do not need to socialize much.Society comes to them. My brother is always telling me that when I am at the computer,it is like letting the world go by.Why answer the telephone or check for company?Technology and its advance keep our company and isolation is often a joy.

I would say you are more socially isolated than you were 5 years ago nevermind 20 years ago.

Well, according to Reuters, that is correct. After all, people don't have true friends, so, instead, they can't wait until the show Friends is on. They meet people who they won't even meet face-to-face and add them2 their emails list and IM each other and they're "friends". Yes, I believe this generation does this for acceptance from others.

Apart from the US government turning the USA into a fortress no not really I think americans get on with their lives as much as anybody.

Quite the opposite. The advent of the internet has made worldwide communication nearly instantaneous. With the rise of broadband and DSL, everyone can even send or receive text, data, images, sound, and even video. If anything, the world is even more "networked" thank before thanks to technology.
