I typically associate it with hatred, since it represents those who were willing to try to leave America rather than free other human beings...

This is a piece of true Americana. It was never a hate issue it was really no different than the American flag is now. There were two different styles of life in the states then. Not much different than say the English and British. Very close to the same but had different views.
This inevitably caused a war upon which the two separate flags were flown. The Confederate Flag and the Union Jack, both of which were used to design the current American flag.
To say that the Confederate flag is a symbol of hatred is just wrong and another issue of the lack of education of this nation.

For some it's a battle flag carried into battle by the Army of Northern Virginia or a banner of hatred dispalyed by the KKK.
It's how the flag is used that decides whether it's hated or not. People practised racism under the Stars and Stripes long before the south decided to use a variation of the St.Andrew's cross as the Confedrate flag and race hatred is still matter of issue by some who hide behind the current US flag.

I say that it is hatred because part of the reason the South broke away from the Union is because they wanted to keep their slaves and to keep blacks enslaved. The only reason the South was rich is because it's ill-gotten gains came from the slaves who worked the land without being paid a single red cent. In the South, it was considered impossible to think of a black person as a free person during this time because the vast majority of blacks were slaves. I certainly so not like the Confederate Flag. To me, the Confederate Flag stands for supporting slavery, racism, and hatred.

To me it's the national flag of the South- it's a symbol of our shared heritage and pride in our history. We think of it much the same way we think of the American flag, except that it applies only to the South. We have a lot of affection for it for much the same reasons that we like to sing "Dixie" at the county fair or name high schools after Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. We aren't quite a separate country- but we're the closest you can get to it without actually being that. Why should people care if we like to celebrate our differences from the rest of America or if we're happy being who we are? Nobody else gets attacked or looked down on for doing that. Why should we? I have a Confederate flag in my yard, and I'm proud to have it there. It's a statement about who I am and where I belong. And if anybody doesn't like it, that's just tough. If anybody told me I had to take it down I'd fight them over it.

History. It was the flag the south used during the civil war. Of course, like with many things, it's meaning has changed over the years. But it still is a part of our history.

it is history. ignorant people made it associated with hate by being hateful and flying the Confederate flag. IT is the flag of the south at a time when this country was at war with its self.

To the uneducated, illiterate and idiotic, the Confederate flag represents hatred. It is, in fact, a version of the St. Andrews flag of Scotland. It represents the cultural heritage of the Southern people. I proudly fly one in front of my home. And if someone attempts to remove it, they'll quickly discover why it's called a "Battle Flag".

To the Native Americans the US flag can be seen as symbol of hatred. But to the victors go the spoils. We do not need to kill our past. Any idiot can make anything a symbol of hate. We can not learn from history if we have nothing to reminds us of it

Even though popular belief says hatred, nowadays it really stands for history, freedom, and honor. Most people who fly the flag fly it to honor relatives and ancestors who died under it.
