It is hard to pick just one song since Mr. Cash was very talented and a great songwriter. I actually met Him once. He was very friendly and even listened to me talk about Latin Ballads for about an hour. I think I Walk the Line is an example of how simple yet eloquent and meaningful a song can be.
I Walk the Line
By John R. Cash
Recorded 4/2/56
Number one - Country Chart; Number 17 - Pop Chart
Number 26 - Top 100 Country Hits of All-Time
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine,
I walk the line
I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine,
I walk the line
As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine,
I walk the line
You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

Johnny Cash didn't write Hurt, by the way. Trent Reznor did. That's right, Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nails. Weird, huh?
I like Ring of Fire, Walk the Line, and It Ain't Me, but that's because I'm kind of a poser and only have his greatest hits CD.
He wrote a song for Coldplay called Kingdom Come that I also like a lot.

The best song written by Johhny Cash would be (IMO) either Ragged Old Flag or Big River.
The best song he performed, but did not write would be Sunday Morning Coming Down
