In humans and other hemoglobin-using creatures, oxygenated blood is a bright red in its color. This is due to oxygenated iron in the red blood cells. Deoxygenated blood is a darker shade of red, which can be seen during blood donation and when venous blood samples are taken. However, due to an optical effect caused by the way in which light penetrates through the skin, veins typically appear blue in color. This has led to a common misconception that before venous blood is exposed to air it is blue

blood is actually the color blue when it is not exposed to air. when it comes in contact with air it turns red. but the real tricky question is how do u get the color purple? well to get this color you must suffer an internal bleeding called a bruise. To get a bruise one must be hit continually in the same area

Well, it's always red, but if you cut a vein (I could be wrong...), because the blood has given oxygen to your cells, it turns a more bluish colour. That's why some of your skin looks blue, because of the deoxygenated blood.

The color of blood depends on the chemical property of the atom that carries the oxygen.
In humans, the iron center of the heme group in hemoglobin is the oxygen carrier, and it is what gives blood its reddish hue.
In insects, on the other hand, the atom that carries the oxygen is copper, which is what gives their blood a bluish hue.
