It seems like the government doesn't want us flying the St.Georges flag, because it apparently offends other cultures. Why don't we go all loopy on St. George's day, when everyone goes crazy over St. Patricks day? We're aren't even Irish. It seems like we are losing all our national pride over a bunch of immigrants coming into the country, and I say, if you don't like it, f*ck off back to where you came from.

I know there are England flags being flown all about the place, but why don't we fly them every year, all the time?

There are English flags everywhere at the moment, and so much for the government not wanting them - Tony Blair has one at no 10! This is just an excuse to set off a nasty racist rant. The only thing I'm ashamed of about being English right now is you, Chelseababe.

"The government" has never discouraged people from flying the English flag, where does this myth come from? Next I'll be hearing it's "the EU" banning it or something. There are a few politically correct obsessives (all English in my experience) in local councils etc who are a bit twitchy about shows of English patriotism, mainly because it's so often associated with racism and ranting, as has been clearly demonstrated here. You don't hear 4th July/St Patricks day flag-wavers telling people to join the BNP or f*ck of where they came from.
Having said that, I think reasonable people in England want to reclaim the flag, and rather than doing a classic bit of English armchair grumbling, go and find the facts and do something about it. I live in Dorset and a large international business recently was flying three different random international flags outside as they usually do, but no George's cross. I went in and complained because it's the World Cup and now they have a massive English flag!
And Angelkake - ENGLISH flag not British flag I'm afraid!!!

Normally as the main ones flying the flag have been football yobs, drunking yobs abroad or the national front... So people are ashamed.
And others associate it with that abuse.
Plus The brits have naff all to provide on St Georges day... like you ever been to thse... Compared to say the cinese new year... we need some positive not negative cultures.
quote
and I say, if you don't like it, f*ck off back to where you came from.
That is a typical example of why people dont associate it with parties

Wow, really. Screw that, ya'll should fly a zillion little flags, I think the British flag is one of the most kick @$$ flags!
It kicks @$$ so much, that my 8 year old son has put it on his list for a b-day present (he's a part time pirate, and needs a british flag for a good battle) SEE even my little guy recognizes that no other country flag can even COMPETE with the imfamous pirate Barefaced Julian the Terrible!~

Don't know too much, do you oxyman? In Northern Ireland 12 July is celebrated specifically because it marks the defeat of the Irish at Aughrim (though it is now the Battle of the Boyne that is marked), one of the bloodiest battles in Ireland's history in which the English killed over 7,000 Irishmen. St Patrick's day, on the other hand, doesn't mark any defeat of the English/British. Unless you know better?

One of the things which is offensive about the St Patric's day thing is the Irish celebrating English defeats, I mean Imagine the fuss it would create if we celebrated victory over the Irish on St George's day!

English should be an official language of this country. It is unpractical and wasting money by printing election materials in other languages as they do now. If you print one other language, you should print all other languages in order to be fair. If any immigrant does not want to learn English, he has no intention to be assimilated into American society. Then he should leave or stay as resident, not citizen.

I'm not unpatriotic, I just don't think that a chunk of land is much to shout about.
i'm not going to cry or invade someone's country if they were to set fire to my flag, for instance.
I hang my flag out the window as much as I can; I'm currently looking for a proper flagpole, actually.
