I am renovating my shower. I have taken the existing shower walls and floor out and am down to the studs. I am close to putting up the cement board in preparation for tile. I don't know if I need to install a vapor barrier before the cement board.

Yes you should install the vapor barrier BEFORE the cement board. I am about to remodel my bathroom as well and have read several books on tiling showers/tubs. All of them recommend one because water can still find a way through cement board, mortar, and grout.

Install it directly to the studs. You can use 4-mil plastic sheeting or #15 building paper as a basic barrier.

Good luck with the redo.

all u need is a pan on the floor, we use a thick poly and let it come up the wall about 6 inches. then cement board over the lap. if ur shower is on an outside wall and ur insulation is unfaced, no paper, then install a 4 mil poly before cement board.
