Yes, 700R4's good at this. It need fixed.
Depending on your driving conditions; Hills, towing boats/trailers etc. The 700R4 needs to be kept out of Overdrive!!!!!!!
I have a 3/4 ton truck I pull a 36 foot fifth wheel camping trailer. It have this transmission. After I bought the truck a friend of mine that work on Transmissions, warned me about this Transmission. He said; "I fix a lot of those"!
Then he go to explain, IF, I not use the Overdrive Towing my Trailer and in Hills it should be OK.
Many people may say an Automatic will shift to the Gear it need and this is somewhat true, but, for some reason it not for the 700R4. Not sure it with the Torque Converter or what.
jason below me is correct though, it could be low on fluid. Just put a Quart in and see if it do better, then learn how to use the dip stick so you can fill to the correct level. IF, it the Seals leaking, just back the Van up and look for Red Fluid on the ground and then you know it just a leak.
Also, if the Transmission need Rebuilt ask "How Much"!!! Then call a local Chevy Dealer and ask "How Much for a NEW Transmission" Sometimes you may be surprised!!!! I can get a Brand New Engine (Not Rebuilt) for $1,200 and a Brand New Transmission for $1,800. It blowed my mind and the Dealer say; "Yea the Retail much more, but, we sell them cheap and we sell a lot of Engines"!!!! The Transmission may be a little expensive, but, see what a Rebuild cost, NEW may be better route if you can afford it.
Hope it just low on Fluid and a Leak that easy to fix.
One last thing and I stop. It may just need the Filter and fluid changed. Good Luck.

The 700r4 is an electrically controlled trans.
This particular trans has a known problem.
All the solenoid wires are ran together in the pan.
so when one fails and the wires burn,
it kills most or all of the other solenoids.
so your torque converter is trying to lock up,
its trying to go into 2 gears at once and other problems.
Before you have the whole thing replaced. have it checked.
I have run the the whole solenoid set and flush for less than 400 bucks.

If you have an aamco tranny shop go there. There is a ton of them in pittsburgh. I know the work and it is done very well. If you want to go cheap buy a tranny out of the boneyard. Most repair shops will buy used engines and tranny from the scrap yard so why can't you.

First make sure it has tranny fluid. It might be slipping bands.
