Ok so you will have an equation that you want to equal 3.20 in the end. And you know how much the first mile cost, and every .10th of a mile was ten cents, but you don't know how many miles she went so what you do is:
.90 + .10x=3.20
Where x is the distance she went in 10th of miles/
if you subract .9 from 3.20 you get
.10x=3.20-.90 ==> 2.30. You then divide the equation by .10
so you get
.10x/.10=2.30/.10
then you get
x=23. So since the distance was in 10ths of a mile, it is 2.3 miles, since 23*1/10=2.3, or you could say 23 10ths of a mile
The finall answer is 3.3 miles, because you have to add the initial mile to the equation.

That question will give you a headache. First of all, This answer can't be completed yet without more information. I take Taxi Cabs all the time, the taxi cabs ALWAYS start out with a fee of at least $2.14 thru $2.40 to get to just show up to your house. Then they drive you to the location. Another important fact is that if they are excellerating on the gas pedal. This will cause the price to go up. And it will also matter if you are sitting in traffic and how fast they are going.

oldsciencegeek is correct, 2.4 miles. The individual who calculated 2.3 miles had the right idea, and explained it well, but would actually end up charging $.90 plus $.10 for the first tenth of a mile. The equation should be:
$3.30 = $0.80 + $0.10x
where "x" is the distance traveled in miles.

about 3.56 miles, assuming .90 and .10 are money and that every mile is $0.90 exept the tenth one is $.10. actually, the tenth mile thing didn't even matter here..

x + 9 = 32
x = 23
23 * .1 = 2.3
2.3 + 1 = 3.3
ANS : 3.3 miles
