Yes indeed, Las Vegas is translated as The Meadows.
It got it's name back when the area was first discovered by explorers along what would eventually be known as The Spanish Trail. They stumbled upon the valley to find a relatively verdant plain of trees and green grasses fed by the natural artesian springs in the area, a surprise considering the rest of the surrounding area was just desert. Seeing this "oasis" in the desert they called it Las Vegas.
