The different kinds of goldfish started in China over a 1000 years ago. In fact, goldfish was mentioned as early as 940 AD. It was common as it is now, to have a small pond with some fish in it for beauty. To get away from stress, people would relax by the pond.

By putting similar colored and body types of fish together to spawn, you would double up the qualities that you want. This is called inbreeding. A goldfish could have hundreds of babies,(fry), and by keeping only the best ones that you like, and letting only them breed, you can improve or change their color, change their shape, give them long flowing fins, or short stubby fins, or even move their eyes to bulge out and only see upward.

Goldfish are grey when they are little, and gradually turn black with orange, then orange. If they are kept in the dark, some will turn white.

Lets say that you have a pond of goldfish with a lot of predators eating goldfish.Sooner or later, you will have some throwbacks that will remain grey. This makes them harder for predators to find. The goldfish with the fancy eyes won't be able to see well enough to escape from being eaten. The long finned goldfish can't swim fast and will be eaten quickly. What will survive is the plain finned, normal eyed, grey goldfish. They will have babies, and in time, you will have a pond of fish that look like carp.

Goldfish are in the carp family but who wants to keep a plain fish when you can keep one that is a calico(,Shubunkin), pretty tails,(fantails or veil tail) all black with bubble eyes, (black moor)or ones with unusual scales, (pearl).
The reason goldfish exist is because they are beautiful to look at and bring enjoyment to those that keep them.

Comet Goldfish can swim very fast and need large tanks. I have Black Moors now but when I had Comets I fed them live food, frozen peas and spinach leaves. Once a week I would feed them pond pellets. I think they will get about 8 to 10 inches long in a large tank. Black Moors (which are fancy) will grow about 5 or 6 inches, maybe more in very large tanks. My Moors are 12 years old.

Pet goldfish are like dogs; we created them by manipulating natural differences in long term breeding programs. Genetically goldfish are pretty much carp, but you couldn't tell by looking at them, just like you couldn't put a Toy Poodle next to a wolf and tell it was pretty much the same thing, either.

You know, you find 2 carp who are a pretty gold color (wild carp are brown) and breed them together, pick out the gold ones, and breed THEM together, pretty soon you have hundreds of golden carp. Thats pretty much where most domesticated animals came from, it's just most obvious in goldfish & dogs.

to take up time of people with no other sole purpose other than to look at a fish in a cereal bowl and feed them flakes, while cleaning their tank every week.
