The person I am dating says he was divorced in New York - New York records are closed unless you are a party -- any ideas how to get to the truth?

If you know the court where the proceedings were held call the clerk of the court. You do need to check. My now-ex was not divorced before he married his second wife. It was a mess. If he loves you he will help or show you the signed AND court stamped papers.

Yeesh, if you feel you need to go behind this guy's back to see if he's telling the truth about a DIVORCE, then there are major problems with this relationship. Get out of it now, or else don't complain if it goes bad, because it sure as hell will.

Public records search. Or call a P.I. and they can get access to the records databases for you.
He should have paperwork that proves it.
If you're already dating his honesty now, dump him before you waste any more time with him. He sounds like a sneak.

Find out through casual converstion who his ex was and ask her. But just a piece of advice. If you feel you can't trust him now how do you think the future will be any better? liars are hard creatures to cure. Good luck.

He's lying, divorces aren't closed. Besides if he's one of the parties, he'd have papers.

I agree with helperk,ASK HIM FOR A COPY, but why would you want to be with someone you have to question?? Usually I find, that when you have a funny feeling about something, it is for a reason.

If you aren't comfortable enough to believe him on this maybe you should find someone else. You could always contact his ex but expect repercussions.
