Your question should be can we afford NOT TO. The space program provides the stimulus that is normally found in a war setting for technology development. Hundreds of products you enjoy today and take for granted because you don't realize there origin are in fact offshoots of the aerospace industry. Be glad you or someone you know is not dying so scientist can work in a hothouse environment to kick start new technology.

This has been an argument for some time now...
and it seems valid until you look at what the Space program has done for humanity...

The Chandra Observatory in space has had technology derived from it to provide non-invasive breast examinations to detect cancer, etc.

The satellites in space are one reason modern electronics are here because the push to develope supercomputers, and cellphones, IPOD's, etc. Also monitoring the earth from space has helped us do everything from monitoring erosion from farmlands, Global Warming, deforestation, warning about hurricanes, and bad people who would want to point missles in our direction.

In the short-term, it may not look that the space program pays off. But without the push to create new ideas, and forge ahead, we would still be living in caves somewhere.

I think we can always find the money to go into space, because the space program is so important to our society as a whole. But I worry about the safety of it all..............another disaster may be on the horizon because of poor management... too many problems with the shutle..Not very safe

It's a waist of time. I mean what did the moon accomplish? I think the scientist should spend time on something important like a longer lasting light bulb or a microwave that heats evenly.
