It's become acceptable since the coming of age of the Super Model. Television glamorizes skinny actresses.
On the flip side though I see young women especially at the High School and College age overweight and letting that weight squeeze out over their tight clothing they wear and it doesn't seem to bother them or their friends.
It's hard to say what society thinks really. Though I do think prejudice against overweight people is still very much alive.
I have a girlfriend very much overweight, but the way she carries herself and I mean in the best clothes, shoes, I'm telling you she is beautiful. She has beautiful skin and long beautiful dark brown hair and when we go out men flock to her.
So, with that said, and from my own observations society does not make you feel like crap, you make yourself feel like crap.
You want to look good then work at. It's all in the way you carry yourself.
You can either look your best or not, and honestly, you can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she keeps themselves.
Don't let society make you feel like crap. It's time people take responsibility for themselves.
Remember this: If it's not working find another way.

Maybe the financial crisis is forcing poor clothes designers to make clothes with less fabric so that they can save some money. Save Armani, the guy is STARVING!
Seriously? Here's a theory. Back in the old days, women that were skinny and tanned were sick and/or poor. So the role model was a pasty-white, plump aristocratic woman. Nowadays, the role model is a woman who does Pilates and eats healthy, sophisticated food. Again, it's about the higher class. Lower/middle class people nowadays have no time to take care of their bodies or not eat from their local fast food chain. Which leads to non-sculptured bodies, yada yada.

Women spend fortunes on their hair, clothing, jewelry, so. many things to make themselves look nice, but all of that is wasted if it's hung on a very unattractive body.
Another reason is that there are many imperfections that we have no control over, like the shape of our chin, the size of our nose, our height, etc.
The one thing that we can control is our weight. Fat is something that we volunteer for. FOOD MAKES FAT.
Eat less and loose weight. Eat more and gain weight.

i'm not sure it's 'society'....it's women. Sure, some guys don't like fat women....but plenty of them do(note how many fat women have Bf's or husbands). Women on the other hand are down right nastly about it. And even worse is the way women are to themselfs.....most guys can relate to the GF going crazy about the '5 pounds' she gained...taking her all the way up to 130 pounds....

Why do overweight people look for equality when they eat more and refuse to excercise and live a HEALTHY LIFE? I notice most of the people who are UNHEALTHY carry around a negative attitude. As if it's not their fault they're fat. I'm not saying everyone should be skinny, but for ***** sake, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!

People tend to cover their fear from anything unusual by laughing at it and because of that they become more and more superficial and vulgar.
