Because the technology is fairly unreliable, so it isn't conclusive proof in any case, and in any case it would be a violation of the suspect's Fifth Amendment rights to not be compelled to testify against themselves.

Lie detector tests are highly inaccurate. If a person is nervous when taking one, they will be found guilty by heart rate and BP. If a person is a sociopath, they heartrate and BP as well as temperature are typically lower. Most sociopaths can actually beat lie detector tests.
Another way for the common man to beat a lie detector test, is by taking something like Benedryl before they go in for their test...
Easily beaten...ineffectual.

Lie Detector tests are not foolproof (remember the George Costanza character from "Seinfeld" saying: "It's not a lie if you believe it"). A polygraph test measures blood pressure and heart rate. It is a fallible procedure. Some people are just pathological beyond belief (and the most likely criminals certainly fit the bill).

because there is a significant margin of error. lie detector tests read vital signs in our bodies (heart rate, breathing, and sweating) that are affected when a person lies. a person's heart rate and breathing rate increases when they are lying. it also increases if they are nervous, scared, angry, or for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with guilt or lying. this is unreliable causing a false positive test. some people also don't experience any changes when they lie, causing a false negative.
