Ok, I'm an 18 year old female and next summer I'll be moving to Rome ( by myself) for a year to study and to work. I've researched the crime rates and found that they are very low and the only thing to really worry about is pick pockets. I told my mother all of this but she is still terrified I'll be stolen or something. I've tried to assure her that I'm going to use my common sense and not go out at night by myself, not get into cars with strange men, stay away from deserted ally ways, and that I'm going to stay in a crowd so it'll be less likely I'll get abducted but she's still paranoid. Any advice on what to say to her so she won't be pulling out her hair the whole time I'm gone?

Honey, your mom is always going to feel this way no matter what age you are. If you have always been trustworthy, the way you sound, and you have already given her your assurances, then just love her and stay calm, but go on and live your life. Keep in touch while in Rome, but don't make any promises to call her at specific times, because you may not be able to do that. Just let her see that you are confident, you are capable, and you will behave responsibly - as I am sure she taught you. Good luck on this great adventure.

Nope! Just tell het you will call her every week and then do it! As for the crime rate....I used to live over there...what goes on here,is the same over there. You sound like a very level headed person. Common sense is the best form of protection there is(plus the ability to be a UFC contender helps!LOL)...have fun and enjoy all the history from there. It's like stepping back in time, plus all the fantastic food! I envy you....

She'll be fine! Tell her that she rased you well! That you are very reponsible and street-wise! And she can call you every day to check on you.... Whatever works. Good luck in Rome.
P.S. watch out for those cute Italian men! Don't mess around, they will brake your heart ..........

There's really nothing you can say or do. Your mom just has to let you go, in the larger sense. Remind her that you have gone through high school, learning to drive, dating, etc...and she has survived it, this is just another step down the road.

I think you'd better listen to your Mom. There are warnings everywhere about how unsafe European travel is for Americans in this day of age.

It seems like you are mature and smart. She trusts you but it is hard for her to let go of you for the year. Remind her that you are trustworthy and smart.
