He has a straight? You mean 8-9-10-j-q? That's the only one I can see from the dealt cards.
If so, he did a very gutsy call on the river, since he had only an open-ended straight draw to go all in. There were two queens already showing; if he'd drawn anything other than an 8, he'd have lost. He took a big chance and won. Just a bad beat for you, I'd have played it the same way.

It's hold-'em. Crap happens.
After the flop he had an open-ended straight draw, which mean he had 8 outs to go (any of four kings, any of four 8s...remember he had eight outs although you knew one of the kings was off the board). Percentage wise, he's realizing he has an 8 in 46 chance of hitting his open ended straight, which is around a 20% chance of hitting his straight. He has a 20% chance of hitting when he has to pay another 4$ to make the pot $12...that's a 1:4 pot odds. So, he has roughly a 1:5 or 1:6 chance to hit his straight and has to pay 1:4 pot odds. That makes the pot and outs odds fairly even.
If you went all in on the turn, you would have made it $20 to go on a $12 pot, means he's had to pay $20 to a possible $52 pot, which is close to 1:2 or 1:3 odds to still make his straight (still pretty much a 1:6 chance. Not good odds to most people, but he gambled and it paid off for him. If you had more money to go all in with, it would have made the pot odds ridiculously bad for him and he may have not chased the river and you'd have taken the pot.
Of course, it also depends on if the 10-9 was suited. If it was 10-9 of spades, then he had more than 8 outs, he could have caught any remaining spade for a flush, too. That would have given him 7 more outs, giving him a total of 15 outs. That's now 15:46 which is 1:3 odds which puts the pot and card odds very even. In that case, he did the right thing by calling what I would consider your very good play. You hit top pair on the flop and played it aggressively, then tried to sucker a little more money out of him when you tripped on the turn, but you maybe should have checked on the river. Raising on the river can be deadly. Sometimes is best to check so you won't allow the other person to have sucked out and sucked you in to a losing bet. Lots of pros will recommend that you check on the river, even when you think or know you've got the best hand, unless it's the stone cold nuts (top flush or full house).
You did well until the river, and even your play on the river wasn't that bad.
Don't let it bother you. It was a bad beat and it happens to the best of us and it won't be the last time. Getting better at the game comes with knowing how to accept loss and keep a positive spirit of the game.
Good luck. 74.

First of all.. if the flop was Qs Jd 5s the turn Qc and the river 8c, how did this guy get a straight?? I don't see how a straight would have made it. I did however like your play as you had Ks Qd and got a pair with a good kicker, then you got trips..that was a good play, but I think chances are this guy would have called with anything..he played it loose and he was just calling rather than folding to an apparent pair on the board. I just still have trouble with that person having a straight, even A K..he would need a T on the board not a 5 or an 8. You should also include what cards he was holding. Hope I helped..if not, sorry. :)

You did not make a mistake the odds of him getting that straight was very low, this is one of those occasions when even though you played the right way, you just got beat by a lucky draw. Although this will happen now and again, in the long run playing right will win you money. It`s just one hand after all, and luck can on occasion make the worse player win (albeit only now and again).

after the river i would have checked first...let him show you how powerful of a hand he has...you should have probably raised a little more after the turn though...i'm assuming he had 9 10 which makes an open ended straight draw which is a pretty good hand usually so i don't know...that's a tough place to be
