I would like to jump start my 85 Honda Shadow(VT 500 C) with my Ford Explorer. Can this be done with out ruining the motorcycle?

Thanks for your answers. I jumped it with out the car running and it started right up. Now I just have to get a new battery since it didn't charge when I left it running for a while.

I don't see why not. If the Motorcycle has a 12 V system, then I'm pretty sure it would be ok, as long as you make sure you get the polarity right.
The only difference on a car is that the battery holds more and is able to deliver more current to the starter.
To me that's like asking if you can fill up a 1 galon container from a 2 galon container. Sure, you can fill it up twice.
I don't think you even need to have the car started, in fact it's probably better if you disconnect one of the car's cable from the terminal so you're only getting current from the battery.

I'm relatively sure they are both 12 volt systems, What does it say on the motorcycle battery?

Is the kick start broken?

Anyway, just don't have the Explorer running when you do it. The alternator might be putting out too many amps for the bike and you don't want to fry the bike's electrical system.

Positive to Positive.
Negative to Negative.

Yes you can jump start a bike with a car. The only thing is that it needs to be a 12 volt system on the bike.

You can jump start a motorcycle with a car battery. MAKE SURE THE CAR IS NOT RUNNING. A car's alternator puts out to many amps and will damage your bike if the car is running.

No, its not recommended, the voltage might be 12 v but the amperage generated by the Explorers alternator is much to great for the bike, and you are risking some very expensive electical damage to sensitive items like the bikes engine computer module.

No problem. They both have 12 volt systems. I have done it many times myself.

You can jump it, but don't do it with the Explorer running.

No need to jump start a cycle when you can push start it easier.
