Acoustic/electric basses still have that "acoustic" sound and if you're playing with distorted guitars it won't sound right, to me anyways.

Some of the Beastie Boys' funk instrumentals featured an upright bass, as well as "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed. In short, it may be a bit more work to play, but if you're serious enough and creative enough, there's nothing stopping you.

Probably. I think as long as you have an amp powerful enough it should not matter with your preference for an acoustic bass. I do believe that an electric bass would be better if you play hard.

Absolutely! I have been to loads of gigs with an acousitc base...it's so versatile and really adds something extra to the music
