Its pathetic to go somewhere back East and have someone say "Where are you from?" Then, when you reply "New Mexico" they respond with some idiotic comment like "Wow. You speak English well." "Did you have to get a passport to come here?" I mean, come on! Its disgracing America! We are part of the 50 states!

Obviously you're not old enough to know that the population East of the Mississipi River don't consider the country West of the Mississippi exists. From New York City Eastward to New England doesn't think anything worth knowing about exists West period.
New Mexico is one of the most beautifull states(except driving through Deming in the desert to AZ).
Shows how pathetic the school systems have become.

See above--she's on the right track, but I suspect it's because of the students themselves...
I seem to remember a story in the Rocky Mountain News one or two years ago where a New Mexico student had decided her best choice for a university was Indiana. She applied, and the school responded that they hadn't received her visiting student visa yet....

Amazing what is not taught in schools today! I had a daughter born in Okinawa years ago, and my parents tried to call me on the phone. The operator had no clue where to find the country code!!! My parents gave up and sent me a telegram instead! It is really sad when they (people) don't know a state in their own country! Oh, try this: Someone once thought that New England was the capital of Massachusetts!!!

Wow, this is where I feel I fail as a social studies teacher. Geez people you need to know where you come from!! I can easily relate, I used to be a counselor at a camp in New York state (I'm from Ohio) and I would get questions like "Are you Amish?" "Have you seen a cow?" "Do you have cable?"

I think that New Mexico is the only state whose license plates have USA on them. Of course, that won't help much if you don't have your car with you.
