It usually gains 3. You know this because it has 5 electrons in its outermost shell (if you don't know how you know this, e-mail me and I'll explain.) It is a lot easier to gain 3 electrons, than to lose 5.

I agree with KansasSpice. I would also like to add.........depending on the element is combines with as well. It is most likely to combine with elements that need to lose 3 electrons.
