It's doesn't. That's how language evolves.

Language and writing (including spelling) are important for so many reasons. For instance, many people are impatient and annoyed by someone who has English as a secondary language, whose usage is a little broken or sketchy. Think how difficult it is for them to learn English when many of us don't use it properly ourselves. Think of all the ways people use slang. A single word can have multiple contradictory meanings. It saves alot of time and headache if we can understand each other with a common usage of words. Poor communication is one of the leading causes of distress in all kinds of relationships, personal and professional.

Please do not be offended when someone wants to correct or give guidance. A nudge toward self improvement is not an insult. The difference between apathetic and empathetic is like night and day, so knowing the spelling and meaning are pivotal. If you wrote one when you really meant the other it could be very consequential.

Language is an ever evolving art and science, so it may be difficult to ever know the correct version of every word. I learned to use the words "cannot" and "alot" as a child, but now everyone separates them as two words.

It is the thought that counts, but getting your thoughts across effectively and intellegently is key. Don't let this be an obstacle to people taking you seriously or respecting your opinions.

It is not the end of the world to make mistakes. However, it would be nice if people were not lazy or irreverent about the manner in which they communicate. Perception is often determined by this and this alone. I recommend a fine film called TO SIR WITH LOVE to illustrate my point.

It matters because people will take you more seriously. Spelling correctly, whether accurate or not, comes off as a sign of intelligence. It's too easy for someone to dismiss a written argument out of hand if the spelling is constantly wrong.

Spelling can cause all sorts of problems. Its less so when people are from the same nation - but imagine trying to understand a note from someone english when your say french.. you may not be able to figure what the person was trying to say due to the spelling mistakes.

Here's an example of how just two letters can cause problems:

A note from one fisherman to another

He reeled in a load of carp

make a typo and its ..

He reeled in a load of crap

oops...

You see its important to spell correctly.

Yeah. I guess that's not important huh? If there was no correct way of spelling and writing, how would anybody ever know what was being said or how to say it. Think about it, would you want to spend hours trying to decipher something someone wrote who did not spell or write properly. No, you would want them to write and spell clearly so you could understand what they were saying.

Probably that's for better understanding, it might not matter if you say or write incorrectly to someone who knows you already.. because it is nothing new to them... But if like you're giving direction to a stranger and you say things incorrectly... then thats where the issue begin....

You may never know, the urgency of the situation that you need to give specific information and that you are not used in doing or saying so...

It doesn't matter at all..

.. if you're content to work at McDonald's the rest of your life.

I've been to 3rd world countries where it mightn't be spelled right but the point gets across - but that's the 3rd world, there is absolutely no excuse to be illiterate by virture of laziness in our affluent society.

Because good spelling is most of the times the ONLY indicator of somebody's education, as it is on the internet!

Because it is a strong indicator of whether or not you made it past the 8th grade. Which then in turn has an influence over how seriously people take you.

It makes you look stupid. Especially since we have a spell check feature. some misspellings look intentional and that just looks like a person trying to seem cool.

Because it promotes a sense of professionalism so people can take you seriously.

Also, you should be made fun of if you honestly don't know how to spell easy words. So you can learn.

You misspelled mean, you idiot (above me).
