I apparently look like an infant or something, even though I'm 22, and I get asked if my mom or dad is around by salespeople and it really makes me mad. I have a kind of childlike voice as well. Can you relate? Anybody have any good retalitations for those people?

It is annoying when that happens. I am frequently mistaken for my daughter's sister, and once a cashier refused to sell me a lotto ticket. I get asked what high school i go to, and while I may appreciate it later, right now I want to slap people. It takes a long time to grow up, you want to be acknowledged when you do!

I'm 30 now so it isn't as bad but I have always looked way younger than I am. It can be offensive especially when people talk to you like you are a child.

When I was a senior in college (I was 23 at the time) I was doing a teaching internship at a junior high and an elementary school. At the junior high I was outside of the classroom when the bell rang and the librarian came outside and started yelling at me and threatening me with detention. At the elementary school I was standing in the lunch line with the children. They had to line up single file against the wall. I was standing away from the wall talking to them. A teacher (I remember her as fat and nasty!) walked by, said "stand next to the wall", and shoved me into the wall! I was flabbergasted that she felt justified in assaulting me because she thought I was a child.

I still get carded for alcohol but not as often. It can be offensive sometimes but more often than not it is frustrating. I guess the good thing is that when we're 50 we'll look like we're 30!

Yeah I get that all the time. I am 25 and I still get mistaken for being younger than I am. Especially at my job, I work at a College, and any faculty and or staff member I meet thinks that I am a student. I am used to it by now, but it is frustrating. I generally don't have a come back for them, they feel pretty dumb when they realize a "youngster" is giong to be fixing thier computer problem. Also once they realize I work for the college, they normally say "Must be nice to look so young." To which I reply "Yeah."

Enjoy the young looks while you can, I have seen what aging does to people and it is not pretty. :)

No need to retaliate. Why be mean to someone who was simply mistaken? I understand you are insulted, but you are outside of the norm - you can't be angry at someone for that. Instead, work on dressing more adult and try to lower your voice. It's possible and might help with not being mistaken for younger. Good luck to you and take comfort in knowing that hopefully this means you'll age better than most other people!

i have always been thought as "that kid " when i was 25. Doesn't bother me at all, i take it as a flattery. With those salespeople, they just want to flatter you, if you need to retaliate, tell them to return when your parents are back and then say they don't want any stuff for they just bought it from another batch of salespeople..But then, what for, if we really look that way? So many people want to look that way and spend lots of money for it.

Younger, lots, I'm 51 and told I look 38; can't imagine being offended. Sure used to get mad when I got carded in my 20s, though.

My daugher is 13, often mistaken for 17,18,19, that scares me!

Yes.
One day, I was mistaked for being my best friend's mother -- twice!
Once was by a lady at the tanning salon + the other time was in the Wal-Mart parking lot where a woman who was fussing with her teenage son stopped me and asked me how "my child" behaved so well.
I do look older, but I'm only *18*!

I'm in my thirty's and I was stopped by the police earlier this year while out shopping. The officer asked me to stop and proceeded to ask why I was not in school. After I realized he was not kidding I showed him my ID and he apologized. He said I looked like I was a truant.

I'm 27 and I'm a teacher! people, parents and even students think I'm younger and a student myself! It doesn't bother me, except when people are insistant and try to relate my physical appearance to "my authority as a teacher" (like, you look so young, isn't hard to get yourself respected?.????)
