If you're looking for a way to get the pattern straight on it, use waste cloth. tack it to the front, and it acts as a mesh grid. Then when you finish, just wet it and pull it out strand by strand, and it will leave the pattern you embroidered on whatever was underneath.

I would use a really sharp embroidery needle and one of those elongated oval type hoops. I assume you mean your doing it by hand?
