ok is anyone else angry about the fact that parents are blaming myspace for the rapeings of young girls?... the only reason this is happening is because girls that are to young for it will make acounts and dress like slluuts and and put the picture up there and say they are older than they are and put where they really live and their real full name. and if the parents really care, why dont they filter their computers or pay closer attention to the sites their children use? some states may outlaw myspace and i think its totally unfair for us safe myspace users. what do you think?

I think that myspace has some risks, but you just have to be careful. Don't talk with people you don't know. Also be careful about things that are posted on your page. Sometimes people can have enough details on their page to be easily tracked down. Its just like anything else in life....you must use caution. It is very sad to think that myspace could be outlawed because parents don't keep track of what their children are doing on the internet. Hopefully it never comes to that.

No. I'm angry that the parents aren't paying attention to what their effing children are doing so that they end up getting raped or kidnapped, etc. People like that should NOT be allowed to have kids. Just because the kids are putting up slutty pictures, doesn't mean they're screaming "Rape Me!" (Unless, of course, it says that on their profile!) The parents blame myspace because they want to try and take the focus off themselves and what THEY'RE doing wrong.

it's not myspaces fault. Personally i think they should make it an adult site and keep all the little kids off it, but that would be hard to monitor with out charging and adding ID verification. I make my husband go through any friend request he gets from females and i dotn care what the age says, if they look under like 30 they are deleted and blocked. they could be 40 in real life, who cares! it's just not safe to assume anymore.

I am, I agree with that, it's not a place for sexual predators...It's the 12 and 13 year old girls that try to look, act and be 20-something! That's why they get raped, they act like wh or es and then when some guy hits on them they think it's ok to give their number or address or meet up somewhere, and it's not! Get over it, Myspace is no worse than Yahoo!, Hotmail, hi5, or MSN! You set up your profile the same way, and chat the same way....

Yes! OMG! I've even seen some girls/guys my space's where they put there telephone #!? Don't get me wrong I don't think it is right that these girls were hurt, but if you are that stupid to actually do stuff like that, you deserve what you get into.
However, I see on the other side of things that w/ parents w/ the "my daughter/son is perfect it can't be there fault" that the only thing they can blame is the site itself. My question is to them, OK your daughter/son is so perfect then how is the site's fault for putting a slutty picture up, a telephone # up, an address up... answer me that.
Anyways....

Well, yes, I am angry that myspace is being blamed for the rapings and violence that has been happening between its users. It is really terrible that there are so many creeps on myspace, but hey, that's the world for ya. Myspace has the same risks as yahoo, msn, and even daily life off of the computer! The bottom line is, you talk to strangers, you give out too much personal information, you break the rules that were set there to protect you...you are putting yourself at risk. Going on the internet is a risk in itself. You just have to know how to keep yourself safe - for example, not giving out your age, not posting up provocative photos of yourself, not giving your telephone number, your address etc...It's just common sense, and those people who don't have enough common sense shouldn't be using the World Wide Web at all until they get some, because let's face it, without common sense we'd all probably be dead by now.

Anyway, Myspace isn't at fault for the crimes committed by pedophiles to these young girls on Myspace, because Myspace has done many things to try and prevent this. They give younger users protection by making their profiles private and only viewable by their friends, and there is also an age limit of 13 as to who can make a profile. When you sign up for an account, they say only kids 13 and up can make a profile. Now if the user wants to lie about their age and pretend they are a 19 year old, fine. It's so easy to lie on the internet when nobody sees you - (lucky for pedophiles).
After this point, what more can Myspace do?...the site has taken reasonable measures to protect its users, but now it is up to the parents to monitor what their child is doing. Let's say a 12 year old girl had been chatting with a 19 year old (actually 57) for months online and has often been meeting up with new online "friends" at the local mall. She has an array of half naked photos of herself posted up on her profile. She has her phone number, favorite places to hang out, school, street adress... then later, we find out that she gets raped by that 57 year old... but the parents had NO IDEA any of this was happening behind their backs! Is that not neglect? Is this the Site's fault? You don't know what your child does, you don't know who they're hanging out with, you don't know who they're talking to... You SHOULD know all of this. Know your kids. Parents can keep their kids safe by keeping the communication lines between them and their kids open.

Instead of banning Myspace, we need to educate the public about what is happening and how to avoid it. Have parents and schools talk to kids about the dangers of the internet and how to be safe wherever they go, on the computer or not. We live in an age of technology, where the internet gives us easy access to almost anything. It's a great way to keep in touch with friends and make new ones, but unfortunately, there are so many creeps on the internet, and the world will never be free of creeps. We don't have to hide out because of all the dangers out there, but It's up to us to use common sense and internet safety to keep ourselves and our kids safe.

Myspace is full of people lurking after you. Myspace will not be banned to minors but access to minors profiles will be restricted to adults. That's the best way I think.

MySpace allows registering users to be as young as 14. [7]. Profiles with ages set to 14 to 15 years are automatically private. Users whose ages are set at 16 or over do have the option to restrict their profiles, [1] as well as the option of merely allowing certain personal data to be restricted to people other than those on their 'friends list'. The MySpace FAQ page does not go into detail about being under 16 in order to have a private page.[12] The full profile of or messaging someone under the age of 18 is restricted to their direct MySpace friends only. According to the MySpace.com Terms of Service, lying about one's age to make one's profile private defeats the purpose of social networking and is considered fraud. Any profile caught doing it will be deleted. However, numerous accounts presently exist which contain direct admittance of a users actual age in the Headline of the users profile, despite the displayed age of 17 or under. Many users set their ages at a private degree to lessen potential Friend Requests from a specific group of people, particularly those who are only looking to increase their Friend Counts. As an alternative, MySpace.com suggests removing restricted information from public view.

Despite the privacy of young persons' profiles, it is still possible that some may compromise their security and privacy by posting information such as their home address, phone number, or last name due to their lack of experience. This information could, theoretically, put a person in danger. As a result, Fox says that they will post public service ads warning children of those dangers. Also, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has called on MySpace to raise the age limit of their users in order to better protect children by restricting their use. Republican Pennsylvania Representative Mike Fitzpatrick has also introduced legislation (H.R.5319) to ban usage of the site in public places, such as schools and libraries, and to have the power to tap into usage of the website in those places.

Recently, MySpace has had a number of news reports stating that teenagers have found ways around the restrictions set by MySpace, and have been the target of online predators .[13] In response, MySpace assures parents that the site is safe for people of all ages. The use of MySpace by Islamic political activists has raised concerns about links with terrorism, which threatens national and international security.[14]. Starting around late June 2006, Myspace users over 18 will no longer be able to add users under 18 as friends unless he/she knows the user's full name and/or email address, and vice versa. [15]
